Wolds Way 2002
27th October 2002.

The first of our one day runs, the Wolds Way attracted 9 entrants.  Unfortunately on the morning of the run, 2 had to drop out due to mechanical faults.

The convoy for our route, from the Humber Bridge at Hessle near Hull to Scarborough on the East coast, contained 4 Defender 90's, a Discovery, a Freelander and a Bobtailed 300Tdi Range Rover.

Unfortunately, the weather did not appear to be on our side as we gathered at the viewpoint car park at the foot of the North side of the Humber Bridge.  It was dull, windy and raining.  Not what we had hoped for by any means.  However, by the time we came to set off, the rain had stopped and the skies were clearing.  Maybe there was hope yet!

The first part of our journey, led us away from the side of the Humber, through Hessle and the nearby villages of Melton and Welton.  We then came to our next major town, Brough.  The convoy stayed together as we passed through the main street, with passers by stopping to look and wonder.  Onto the back roads now, through North Cave and South Cave, then North Cliffe and South Cliffe.  Now we cross the A1079 York to Hull road, and enter the village of Market Weighton.  Straight across the high street, and now we're heading back into open country.  We pass through the small villages of Londesborough and Nunburnholme.

Just as it appears we are about to stumble across another major town (Pocklington), we turn off onto a small lane past Kilnwick Percy Golf Club, and into the village of Millington.

Now we're onto a windy road that's just wide enough for cars to pass in the opposite direction.  This road takes us past Millington Wood, a local nature reserve and the views are getting better by the minute.  Even the rain is holding off, just!  The next village on the route is Huggate, which we pass through in a glance, and now we're back to a main(ish) road, the A166 and our lunch stop at the village of Wetwang.

We arrive at Wetwang at just after 11.30am.  We're making good time, but there's a downside to that.  The pub doesn't open till 12!!!

Packed lunches are eaten in the comfort of our vehicles, as we wait (some desperately) for the use of the facilities in the Black Swan.

After lunch, there's time for a quick photo call before we're off again, back into open country straight away.

The rain starts again as the villages get smaller and further apart, with farms and rolling hills between each of them.  The first we come to is Sledmere, then West Lutton and West Heslerton.  Now we have to cross another major road, this time the A64.  We all manage to get across, still in an uninterrupted convoy, as we head into the next village of Yedingham.  We must be getting close to our final destination now, as another main road comes up soon.  The A170 is crossed, and we seem to be back to nature, heading into the woods, even having to stop at one point to wait for the cows to clear the road before we can continue.

This little used lane (full of puddles) takes our convoy on to one of the final villages, Hackness.  Now it's time for a little climb.  The sharp turns and steep hill on the road up to Silpho prove no problem for Solihulls finest.  As we head through the woods at Silpho Brow, we start to see road signs for Scarborough.  Only Burniston to pass through now, and before we know it, the run is finished, and we've all made it together to the North Bay Car Park at Scarborough.

The vehicles park up in line for another photo call, before all drivers and passengers brave the winds and get out.  As ever at Land Rover meets, the entrants proudly show each other their vehicles, some even admitting to the odd fault or two.  The sunshine didn't really come with us on this run to Scarborough, but the Land Rovers didn't seem to mind, and splashing through the puddles on our way seemed to almost make up for it.

All in all, it seems another successfull outing.  If you were there, thanks for braving the weather, and we hope to see you again soon on another event.
